Cornerstone Mechanical’s reliability technicians were conducting quarterly route-based vibration monitoring and analysis for a client’s mission-critical acid exhaust fan equipment. Due to corporate budget cuts, the client went from quarterly to semi-annual monitoring before opting out of a vibration monitoring program altogether.
A few months after ending their service and after what would have been a route-based collection, the acid exhaust fan’s bearings broke. While the failure didn’t completely halt plant operations, the acid exhaust system lost redundancy, requiring other systems to run at full capacity and increasing the risk of overall system failure.
Repairing the bearings on the acid exhaust fan would have would have cost only $10,000, while the full replacement cost $187,000. If the client had continued to utilize a vibration monitoring program, our reliability technicians would have detected warning signs before a failure occurred, saving the client $177,000.
